I think the true problem with education rests within our present cultural setting. When I hear a complaint about a superintendents salary that is 170,000 a year it gives support to my theory. We as a culture do not value the educational profession as we do so many other areas...from sports, to big business, to the entertainment industry. There are many reasons for this but I do believe that it started long ago as the field evolved and as it did so it was reflected as a "woman's" profession, a care taker role with as much value as the women who pioneered it. That said I see today's world so strongly based on the monetary value of things and people, that it has lost its way and its values. When CEO's, sports figures, and movie actors make millions a year and teachers make 60 or 70 thousand and their CEO's $170,000, if they are lucky, I truly stand aghast and saddened at our morality as a nation. It is easy for Cuomo and others to focus on our schools, it is an easy mark. It doesn't take much courage or forethought. The true hero, the true problem solver would look beyond the box giving honor, respect and dignity to the very core of what will make and keep America an ethical and prosperous country...our educational system.

Unfortunately, most of the costs in a school budget are mandated and not under local control. Teachers and administrators earn every penny they make. Take them both out of the mix and see what can be done.

Fiscal responsibility...what does this mean? Let me define the term as I understand it. Don't spend more than you have! If you have rich uncle who annually gives you $30k--call it a perk. Not an expectation or right or a native part of your income. Don't spend each year to the limit of his giving. If he gives to you for 20 years and suddenly can't afford to give any longer...don't be mad at him!!! Don't ask where his kids go to school. You should be several hundreds of thousands in the black--and grateful. Enjoy your nice rainy day fund. Unfortunately neither individuals nor public institutions think this way. They think it'll always be sunny with never ending prosperity to fund their delusions. Well.. By the way, I'm proved wrong only by the district that finds itself these past few years in no dire circumstance. JFK said: The best time to repair the roof is when the sun is shining. Since it's now raining and the schools have a leaky roof, I guess it's time to try fiscal responsibility. Will it hurt? Yes. But if we all don't learn our lesson here, we're either fools, sadly undisciplined or some combination of the two. Don't blame NYS, blame the addict--the districts. Make cuts. Don't threat cuts to nurses to scare parents... I have thoughts on how to save money but I'll end my harangue here. Always start with the principles that are being upheld or denied. Cuts are being made to just about everything. I think it is inevitable that schools will have to be hit too. Education is surely important, but so are many other government services, such as aid to the blind, funds for police enforcement, and health research projects, etc. So how is the importance of one measured against another? Education, safety, health, etc. etc. are all important....
